The Politics of Vaccination: Astroturfing in the Corporate Media

Or as I should say, the evident attempt to rile up hatred against a small, relatively harmless dissident group to set them up as scapegoats for the vastly worse threats being forced upon us by corporate agriculture.
Let me stress at the outset that this post is not about vaccination in itself. Vaccination makes sense in principle. But I begin by stressing that there are two separate questions here: Vaccine science in principle, and the safety of corporate-manufactured vaccines we actually have. In a typical authoritarian tactic those who criticize non-vaccinators always smear these two together and come up with the standard lie, “anti-vax = anti-science”. Now, maybe there are some non-vaccinators who reject vaccination as such, in principle. But everyone I’ve seen is mostly or completely motivated by skepticism toward the corporations who manufacture and advertise them. Obviously no rational person would take on faith the word of corrupt corporate and government scienticians, given their record to date systematically lying about cigarette smoking, asbestos, PCBs, dioxin, DDT, GMOs, and many other poisons, as well as denying climate change.
[I’ll also stress, since industry propagandists and the corporate media try to confuse this fact, that the rational and empirically-proven common thread is that corporate “science” always lies, dissidents are usually right. To give a common example, in comparing climate change denial with criticism of genetic engineering, the correct conceptual division is not being “for” or “against” some vapid, abstract notion of “science”, though such gaseous conceptual shibboleths are standard with scientism ideology. The correct line which works in real life is the faith-based swallowing of corporate propaganda which calls itself “science”, vs. taking a critical view of this propaganda.
Climate change denial is interesting in that some powerful corporate sectors like finance seek to profit off scams like carbon offsets or geoengineering and so “believe in” climate change, while others like Big Oil are fervent “deniers”. Monsanto and the GMO cartel play both sides of the fence. In reality no corporatist or technocrat cares one way or the other about climate change or its effects. They “believe” whatever it’s profitable to believe. So it’s not surprising that while so far as I’ve seen there are no GMO critics who also deny climate change, the ranks of the pro-GMO activists are littered with climate change deniers – Patrick Moore, Marc van Montague, Ingo Potrykus, Owen Paterson, Matt Ridley, Bjorn Lomborg, just to name a few. So much for the lies of “National Geographic” and others who are desperately trying to push the notion that opposing corporate “science” is the same thing as opposing science. The truth is the exact opposite. Indeed, to support GMOs is by definition to be an implicit climate change denier. This is because industrial agriculture, as the #1 emitter of greenhouse gases and the #1 destroyer of carbon sinks, is the worst sector driving climate change, while GMOs comprise nothing more or less than an escalation of industrial ag and an aggravation of all its pathologies.]
In any discussion or debate I’d keep insisting on keeping the two separate questions, separate. That means, for non-vaccinators as well as for anyone who opposes irrational scientistic lynch mobs, focusing on how dubious corporate-controlled vaccination is. Of course I’m against the corporatism of vaccines, as I am against all corporatism.
There’s incontrovertible evidence, provided by the corporations and the government themselves, that corporate vaccines are inferior and potentially dangerous, indeed likely to cause great harm. This is the fact that in the 1980s the government absolved the corporate manufacturers of liability for any harm caused by their products, no matter how negligent or structurally toxic the manufacturing process was.
In the same way that the refusal of Monsanto or the US government to test GMOs for safety proves that they live in terror of what the results of such tests would be, so the government’s grant of immunity and setting up of a massive corporate welfare fund to force the taxpayers to pay off corporate liabilities for toxic products proves that the government believes the products are going to be ever more dangerous.
Of course it’s obscene and irrational – if dispensing vaccines is too risky for corporate liability, isn’t it too risky in general? At the very least, if they won’t assume the risk, how can their profit be justified? In that case the government should take over the entire operation on a public non-profit basis. There we have proof of principle, of the overall bad faith of the system (how can it be rationally or morally coherent to absolve “capitalists” of risk and force that risk onto the taxpayers, but still allow those companies to collect profit?) and of the fact that the companies and the government believe the legal risk is extreme. They think it likely these vaccines will have dire side effects.
And indeed, as we see with the sometimes lethal Gardisil vaccine (which the Texas state government mandated as a form of poll-tax-via-poison, like forcing people to buy and drink moonshine which blinds them) and the harmful effects of aluminum-based vaccines on people with weak immune systems, there’s specific affirmative evidence of harm.
Unlike GMOs*, vaccines do make sense in principle. But what they could be in principle and what Big Drug corporations actually do in producing them are two completely separate things. The fact that the critics of vaccine dissent are incapable of making this distinction is one of the proofs that they’re motivated not by real concern for public health but by authoritarian cultism.
[*Just two examples of how GMOs don’t make sense in principle: 1. Pleiotropy rules out the long-promised-never-delivered GMOs designed to produce better agronomic and product quality traits. Rendering crops poisonous is not an improvement, but literal poison plants (those which exude a systemic insecticide, those which systemically absorb herbicide, and usually both at the same time) are the only kinds genetic engineering can create. 2. GMOs cannot be capitalized, developed, produced, distributed other than through big corporations. Indeed GMOs were developed in the first place to intensify corporate control and domination. But corporate control is antithetical to productive, food-based, sustainable agriculture. By definition corporate agriculture, producing commodities and poison instead of food, with food then supposed to “trickle down” as a side effect, is incoherent, irrational, and an abdication. GMOs represent the extreme manifestation of corporate agriculture.]
Now we reach the core question regarding those who pretend to support vaccination but should really be called “anti-anti-vaxxers”, since their actions prove they’re not really for anything, but instead are merely majoritarians attacking a small dissenting group. How is it possible to talk meaningfully about the alleged health risks from a relative handful of vaccine dissenters while the same fear-mongers do nothing to put a stop to the infinitely worse public health threat from antibiotic abuse in factory farms and antibiotic resistance markers in genetic engineering? This is, after all, a massive, systematic corporate campaign to destroy the effectiveness of antibiotics. Any adverse health effects of non-vaccination are utterly trivial compared to these and other massive corporate assaults on public health (pesticides, Fukushima’s fallout, just to name two more).
Anyone who doesn’t spend significant time and energy calling for the abolition of antibiotic abuse has zero credibility if he claims to be concerned about the relatively infinitesimal risk of non-vaccination. The shrillness of the anti-anti-vaxxers juxtaposed with their resounding silence where it comes to antibiotic abuse adds up to proof that they’re lying when they claim to be worried about public health. Obviously their “concern” is for something other than public health. On the contrary, they’re authoritarian statists who are outraged by a form of civil disobedience they find particularly offensive as an affront to their statism and scientism. They should be systematically counterattacked as such, whatever one’s views on vaccination itself.
So faced with anyone who claims to criticize non-vaccinators from the point of view of a concern for public health, I start with one question: What have you done to oppose subtherapeutic antibiotic abuse in factory farms and genetic engineering? Please direct me to where you’ve written about or taken action on this.
A satisfactory answer to this is necessary to establish someone’s bona fides. Anyone who can’t do so is a fraud who’s really jumping in a typical way onto an anti-dissident bandwagon out of typically cowardly bullying authoritarian motives.
In my analysis and criticism of corporate agriculture I’ve refused to argue substantively with pro-GMO activists and others who are clearly acting in bad faith and lying about their fundamental motivations. Instead I counterattack to demolish their lies and destroy their credibility. Where it comes to the vaccination lynch mob, dissenters and critics should always counterattack these bad faith liars the way I describe. The only way the people can win is if enough people are disciplined that way. The point is to reveal them as authoritarian liars and hypocrites who have zero credibility as they attack trivial or nonexistent “threats” while the vastly greater dangers go unchallenged. (Remember the crooks who wanted to ban a local seed library out of fears over “agri-terrorism”? Of course the supporters of centralized industrial ag are intentionally rendering America’s food supply vulnerable to terrorism, while decentralization is the only solution to this and every other problem.) I’d never allow an anti-anti-vaxxer to get away with ignoring CAFOs and antibiotic resistance markers in GMOs. I’d just hammer and hammer and hammer – “What are you doing for the struggle to abolish antibiotic abuse, an infinitely worse public health danger?” Until I got a satisfactory answer, I’d refuse to even discuss vaccination. In general, we should seize every opportunity to counterattack and direct attention to the lethal pandemics being prepared by corporate agriculture and by globalization in general.
This takes us to what’s going on the corporate media lately, a top-down media-engineered campaign intended to demonize the trivial group of non-vaccinators. Given the growing evidence of the ongoing harms and great dangers of the corporate agricultural system, as well as how obviously destructive the rest of the corporate onslaught is becoming, the corporate media is increasingly desperate to trump up diversions and scapegoats. In the case of the lethal pandemics already being caused by globalization’s shantytowns and factory farms, and the far worse ones inevitably to come, the system’s goal is to provide scapegoats to divert public fears and anger, as well as to muster fascistic discipline among potential cadres along the lines of scientism, the only purely corporate ideology which can tap into ideological threads which aren’t 100% mercenary. Thus the most unreconstructed, brutal greed, powerlust, sadism, and hate try to make common cause with what’s left of the withering “Progress” ideology.
Whatever the trivial effects of non-vaccination, if any, the great disease incubators of the planet are the factory farms and shantytowns created by globalization and by corporate agriculture in particular. No one who’s not fighting CAFOs, GMOs that use antibiotic resistance markers, and corporate agriculture in general has any standing to say a word about vaccination. Those who do so regardless are really lying when they claim to care about public health. They’re really motivated by authoritarianism.
I’d call this a basic litmus test for authoritarianism and the very ability to conceive in non-corporatized terms: Having the right perspective on an ad hoc handful of non-vaccinators, vs. the massive, systematic campaign of the biggest, most powerful corporations and governments on earth to destroy antibiotics as a medically useful technology. I’d expect anyone who’s on the level to forget the non-vaxxers immediately and get after those corporations and government bureaucracies.
The two necessary goals: Abolish factory farms, abolish GMOs. Nothing short of this can suffice, and nothing short of this can comprise a rationally or morally coherent position for anyone who claims to care about public health.

  1. Russ, I have to disagree with a bit you wrote here. I don’t think there’s any real science that supports vaccinations. I could post some links but I’ll let interested people make the effort. The vaccination scam is part of the larger fiction promulgated by the establishment which basically claims Nature doesn’t work. But Nature actually works quite well when it’s not disturbed. Misidentifying the real cause of disease is classic medical cartel modus operandi.

Some scientists, including the early critics of vaccines, say they create a permanent disease situation in the body, and are nothing like the natural immunity acquired through Nature’s design. I hate to keep referring to Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, where the dentist traveled the world in the 1930s documenting the superb health of peoples that ate their whole food diets, but it’s such a good reality check against the ongoing establishment lie that Nature doesn’t work. Tuberculosis was rampant at that time with cultures eating “modern foods” but the whole food eaters were immune to it, even Native Americans. The story has been severely spun to scare people away from microbes.

All my nieces and nephews have weird breathing problems and food allergies now, that we never did, and that I finally tracked down to being caused by these weird vaccines. Talking to my friend who’s managed a health food store for 35 years, he tells me of how so many mothers have come in telling him how their child was perfectly healthy until being vaccinated and now has serious illness, and doctors are taught it’s all just an amazing coincidence.

Stay far away from vaccines. Follow Ken’s (the farmers in David’s blog) advice: he raised his two kids on raw milk after his wife died shortly after childbirth, and they are now about 30 and have never been vaccinated and never been to a doctor.

    • People, the more you look into vaccines, the more the official story falls apart. To give but a couple examples:

“Polio” correlates perfectly with pesticide use in the US, particularly the huge surge of DDT use. “Polio” was “eradicated” by redefining the disease right after the introduction of the Salk “vaccine”. By changing the definition, what would have been tens of thousands of cases was reduced to a negligible number. The Salk vaccine was a disaster and so the Sabine oral vaccine was quietly substituted. Btw FDR never had polio.

The huge 1918 “flu” epidemic is unlike anything found in history. Look into it. It followed right after the biggest vaccination program in history. These weird concoctions injected into people were the obvious cause of this “flu”.

Remember, the pharmaceutical cartel not only makes money of these huge vaccination programs, but off all the autism, peanut allergies, breathing problems, … created by them. Doctors are well intentioned people, but you don’t get good grades in school by thinking for yourself, you get expelled. You get good grades by being a good robot, parroting whatever Big Brother tells you. The elites that control things at the transnational level fund all sides in the wars they create. This is not a theory. People that would fund all sides in war are capable of anything. This is what controls the medical cartel and so much more. You do NOT want people like this controlling your health care.

If you do some digging you will learn that Nature works just fine when not disturbed. The animals are not being irresponsible by not getting “vaccinated” by the pharmaceutical cartel. They are not being irresponsible licking and touching each other without using antibacterial soap. This actually improves their health. You don’t have to lose sleep worrying if the animals will survive from this. They are being wiped out, but it’s not from the habits they’ve had for millions of years. It’s from the deranged species known as homo sapiens, the same species that has been programmed to think Nature doesn’t work and will believe anything Big Brother tells them, no matter how ridiculous.

      • Yep, Gates and his chemical cabal claimed to have “eradicated” Polio in India. In truth, AFP, acute flaccid paralysis, has increased 12-fold since the introduction of the oral polio vaccine. Poof, Polio gone. What a deal for the thousands of unnecessarily paralyzed children in the giant lab experiment- but at least it isn’t Polio. Unleashing foreign viral strains in third world living conditions with no sanitation… hmmm, what could possibly go wrong.

        Comment by Pete — March 11, 2015 @ 1:48 pm

      • Yeah and for those who don’t know, the “Third World” is a creation of “colonialism”, aka the same transnational crime network that pushes vaccines. Poverty didn’t exist until they created it. People around the world were expert at feeding themselves. They didn’t need some professor to tell them about the seeds they used for eons. But when their lands were stolen and they were driven onto plantations and into “third world” ghettos, now privileged to be called a “developing” country (like in, “developing” a tumor), then it’s a whole different ballgame. (and I won’t even go into the amazing scientific knowledge the healers and leaders of “primitive” cultures possess, for anyone with the intelligence and humility to actually make the effort to learn from them…)

  2. Good post. It would be nice if that kind of logic worked when having a “discussion” with the corporate cultists, but they are illogical by definition. Just piggy-backing on Tom’s reply, an acquaintance of mine through social media is a doctor and has been building a website to help inform people about vaccines. He begins by discussing the premise myth that it was vaccines that saved us from deadly epidemic diseases. He is still building it but I have pulled a teaser snippet from his home page. There are some good resources currently available too.

“The second main concern regarding vaccines is what they are doing to our natural immunity. Vaccination is an attempt to replace natural immunity with manufactured immunity. This has proven impossible to date, both for individuals and for society as a whole, the herd.

Vaccines attempt to mimic natural immunity but they cannot. They bypass most of the layers of the immune system, failing to allow them to develop. They throw off the natural, healthy balance of Th1 and Th2 mediated immunity. They offer limited temporary protection from manufactured pathogens while natural immunity affords us permanent protection. They allow the pathogens to remain in our cells, where the DNA of the manufactured pathogens mixes with our own DNA. Natural immunity expels the pathogens from our cells and our bodies. This unnatural immunity often backfires and leads to a variety of otherwise inexplicable immune system malfunctions in otherwise healthy people.

Possibly worst of all, they destroy the immunity that is passed from mother to child. A mother who has had a disease and developed natural immunity can pass protection from that disease to her child through blood while the child is in the womb and breast milk after birth. A mother who has only manufactured immunity cannot pass it on. All these diseases will come back at some time. If we have not maintained and developed natural collective immunity, we will be decimated. There are examples of this in history.

There is also emerging evidence that the naturally acquired immunity we develop from exposure to these natural microbes helps us avoid other more serious illnesses later in life. Artificial immunity offers no such protection.

Finally, manufactured immunity relies on heavy metals such as aluminum and mercury which are known neurotoxins and further disrupt our natural biochemistry and immunity.

There is one addendum that must be addressed. Many people fear that in some way the unvaccinated or under vaccinated are putting the vaccinated at risk. Without really knowing what they are talking about, they refer to the break down of herd immunity. Let us briefly revisit herd immunity.

Herd immunity is the fact that as a new pathogen and its human host community become more used to each other, virulence and danger decrease. The most dangerous strains have died off and only the relatively more friendly strains remain. The herd is thus immune to damage from the remaining strains of the microbe. Vaccine developers attempt to recreate this natural process through biochemical and genetic engineering, as previously discussed, but their attempts have yet to improve upon the natural process. Natural herd immunity to measles was attained when 68% of a population had been through the illness. In modern populations with as much as 99% artificial immunity there are still outbreaks.

We must also examine the common misconception that an unvaccinated person is more dangerous than a vaccinated person. It is well established that people will be carriers of the engineered version of the microbe for weeks after vaccination. For many of these illnesses it is a rare situation in which an unvaccinated person is sloughing off live viruses while they are not actively ill with the disease. An immune compromised patient sitting in a doctor’s office or a classroom is far more likely to come into contact with an infectious disease through a recently vaccinated person than through an unvaccinated person who is not presently ill.

The idea that the unvaccinated pose a threat to the vaccinated has no basis in fact. It may be that the unvaccinated reduce herd immunity to the engineered microbes, but it is just as likely that the vaccinated reduce herd immunity to the natural microbes. It is much easier to stop engineering microbes than it is to completely eliminate natural microbes.

In examining vaccination it becomes clear that we are engaged in an experiment to re engineer human immunity. There is no compelling evidence to suggest that our engineered immunity is superior to our natural immunity. There is no compelling reason to believe that it ever will be. In fact, artificial immunity, by all indications is far inferior to natural immunity.”

One of the foremost lines of reasoning for the pro-vax authoritarians is that those who refuse to vaccinate are endangering everyone (including their precious children), and this is where they tap into the fear of those following standard medical establishment “conventional wisdom”… this is where the hostility and venom spawn from as the discourse becomes quite uncivil. It’s actually quite frightening.

  3. Russ,

I can put you in touch with Mark Blaxill over at the Age of Autism blog (I know him from our former intellectual property endeavors together; we taxed other corporations, not real people). He’s a great guy and very much in agreement with your view of the value of “peer review.” Based up in Boston, not too far from you. Really smart and down to earth. And he is very tech/science savvy, so the suggestion that he is just a reactionary is complete BS.

  5. Yes, I didn’t say vaccination is an improvement upon a natural, non-toxified life. At best (that is, where not controlled by corporations) it’s a stopgap of decadence in the sense I describe here.

I’d compare it to the Philippine government’s public vitamin supplementation program which has been relatively successful at reducing Vitamin A deficiency. It’s not bad as a temporary stopgap and proves that even if “golden rice” technically worked (which it doesn’t), the GMO with all its pathologies would be unnecessary. But it’s no substitute for a naturally vitamin A-rich agroecological horticulture, nutritionally or in any other sense.

Of course the point is moot since vaccination has been completely hijacked by the poison-peddling corporations.

  7. I should add that the vilification of “anti-vaxxer” is over the top. I am going to call out anyone who uses the term “anti-vaxxer.” Isn’t that prima facie evidence that the speaker/writer is demonizing and dehumanizing her opponent from the start, and it is therefore impossible to engage in an honest debate with that person?
I’ve noticed that my friends who are worried about vaccines are afraid of being labelled an “anti-vaxxer”, and preface their remarks by saying that they are not “anti-vaccine,” but they have delayed or spaced out the vaccinations, and avoided the multi-valent vaccines, etc.
I pointed out to one recently via email that that qualification shows that she is living in fear of being labelled a dissident. Truly disgusting
I don’t think there is any way of knowing right now what the cause of the adverse effects is, but I would wager you are right: good, quality, pure vaccines would likely cause many fewer problems.
I know for a fact that numerous friends have had their children experience seizures or worse immediately after receiving vaccines. Some were permanently damaged. None received compensation from the government. The bar is incredibly high, and most parents give up.

    Comment by Publius Democritus — March 11, 2015 @ 12:56 pm

    • Yep, and doctors are not required to report vaccine injuries… in fact, they often ignore them (or are pressured to do so). Reporting itself is estimated to be about 10% and most parents are not even aware of the injury compensation court/program and/or do not have the resources to go through the bureaucratic court process. Hence, the billions in injury compensation are estimated to be just a drop in the ocean. Just requesting the inserts or ingredient lists of the vaccines can draw ire from doctors who do not want to deal with such picayune details. Just stab your kid with the needle and keep your mouths shut. Sounds healthy, don’t it?

      Comment by Pete — March 11, 2015 @ 1:37 pm

    • Yes, although non-vaccinators may often be individualist types, they’d better understand that they’re being targeted and need to organize.

  8. Update – my dear friend who was not “anti-vaccine,” but successfully protected her kids (and who has read this post I believe), just informed me that she had recently, against her better judgment, taken a flu shot this winter. She quickly got really ill, and another chronic condition she has got worse. I won’t go into the medical details, but they were and are serious symptoms.

  9. Textbook example of vaccination as an attempted stopgap of decadence and corruption, like I mentioned in my comment above.

Of course this example is a pure scam and wasn’t even meant to “work”. But it’s perfectly examplary of the basic pattern: Poison the environment and then look for stopgap anodynes within the poisoned framework.

  10. This is a very lively and interesting comment thread, but it’s a little disconcerting that this post has drawn more attention and animation than other recent posts, even though Russ specifically mentioned it’s not about vaccination itself. While I’m extremely concerned about corporate vaccination propaganda and its resulting attacks on parents like myself, it’s intriguing that most of Russ’ GMO posts haven’t received this amount of commentary.

    Comment by DualPersonality — March 12, 2015 @ 11:56 pm

    • Thanks DP. Either there will be abolitionists or there won’t be. This thread’s great, though I too wish there was such interest in debunking and fighting corporate agriculture.

      Comment by Russ — March 13, 2015 @ 7:38 am

    • GMOs and vaccines are effectively the same issue with the only significant difference being the delivery system- and they tinkle down from the same crime syndicate. Now we are not only fed GMOs orally, we inject them right into our DNA. As Russ often points out, neither have any natural demand and are being forced on us through coercive measures. There is a growing market for genetically engineered vaccines. The list of “issues” that vaccines are being developed for is becoming a comic opera. At the going rate they are going to have to produce a vaccine to vaccinate for vaccines.

“Nobody Knows What Happens When You Inject People with GM Vaccines

There have been some fair warnings, though. In 2006, researchers wrote in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health:1

“Genetically modified (GM) viruses and genetically engineered virus-vector vaccines possess significant unpredictability and a number of inherent harmful potential hazards… Horizontal transfer of genes… is well established. New hybrid virus progenies resulting from genetic recombination between genetically engineered vaccine viruses and their naturally occurring relatives may possess totally unpredictable characteristics with regard to host preferences and disease-causing potentials.

…There is inadequate knowledge to define either the probability of unintended events or the consequences of genetic modifications.”

Though this was six years ago, little has changed even as the technology has advanced. Today we have several different types of GM vaccines in production, development or research phases, such as:

DNA vaccines: DNA for a microbe’s antigens are introduced into the body, with the expectation that your cells will take up that DNA, which then instructs your cells to make antigen molecules. As the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (a division of the National Institutes of Health) put it, “In other words, the body’s own cells become vaccine-making factories.”2

Naked DNA vaccines: A type of DNA vaccine in which microscopic particles coated with DNA are administered directly into your cells.
Recombinant Vector vaccines: Similar to DNA vaccines, but they use a virus or bacteria to act as a vector (or “carrier) to introduce microbial DNA into your cells.

The companies that make vaccines and GMOs (genetically modified organisms) are deeply intertwined, only recently spinning off or merging to specialize in one or the other. Most vaccine revenues are earned by five companies that together held nearly 80 percent of the market in 2010:5

      Sanofi Pasteur
      Merck & Co.

These companies, which use genetic engineering to produce vaccines, are also primarily responsible for the introduction of genetic engineering into the food supply. For instance:

Genetic engineering giant Syngenta (third in total sales in the commercial agricultural seeds market) is the progeny of parent companies Novartis and AstraZeneca.
In 2001, Bayer CropScience became a leading genetically engineered crop producer with its purchase of Aventis’ agribusiness division.6
In 2004, Aventis merged with and into Sanofi. The new Sanofi-Aventis Group became the world’s 3rd largest pharmaceutical company. Aventis Pasteur, the vaccine division of Sanofi-Aventis Group, changed its name to Sanofi Pasteur. Sanofi Pasteur is the vaccines division of Sanofi Group. It is the largest company in the world devoted entirely to vaccines.
Prior to splitting its genetically engineered crop business from its vaccine business, Aventis was known primarily for the StarLink corn debacle (a type of GM corn grown for use in animal feed that contaminated the U.S. food supply in 2000). Bayer now sells Aventis’s Liberty Link crops, engineered to tolerate high doses of the company’s toxic herbicide called Liberty (glufosinate).7
Stauffer Seeds was a spin-off of Stauffer Chemical, formerly a division of Novartis.8 Stauffer Seeds and Prodigene conducted clinical trials on pigs using an edible vaccine for transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) expressed in corn.9
Prodigene was caught contaminating the food supply with its edible vaccine and the company went out of business, but not before it received a $6-million investment from the Governors Biotechnology Partnership, chaired by Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack. Vilsack, now the Obama Administration’s USDA Secretary, didn’t want any restrictions placed on experimental pharma crops. In reaction to suggestions that pharma crops should be kept away from food crops, Vilsack argued that ‘we should not overreact and hamstring this industry.’10
Prior to 1997, Monsanto (the world leader in GM crops) operated under three parts, the Ag Business (for agricultural products), the Chemicals Business, and the Pharmaceuticals Business, which is now Pharmacia, a subsidiary of Pfizer, the biggest pharmaceutical company in the world and the largest manufacturer of vaccines for food animals.11, 12
GlaxoSmithKline, while producing few products for food or agriculture, has been genetically engineering plants, animals and microorganisms for use in vaccines, pharmaceuticals and medical research.13

      Comment by Pete — March 15, 2015 @ 1:48 pm

      • Yup, it’s part of the same biotech complex, has many of the same safety implications (cf. the lethal Showa Denko outbreak, which involved a genetically engineered drug), and many of the same corporate power implications. The propaganda and authoritarian cultism of it is almost the same. I posted it for the sake of the symmetries.

Indeed, if you read the Biotechnology Industrial Organization’s submitted demands for what it wants from the TTIP, it devotes more space to GE pharmaceuticals than to agricultural GMOs.

BTW, John Howard of Prodigene was banned from future involvement in GMO production on account of the 2006 contamination, but as of 2014 he’s back with a new biopharming project, and the USDA’s not doing a thing about it.

  12. It’s easier for people like myself to do something about vaccines, at least for now. We simply vote with our feet. Certainly, GMOs are a thornier problem. But I noted with interest that NY state is evidently moving towards GMO labeling. Not that labeling is the solution, of course. But an encouraging sign that public interest and concern is forcing some sort of action, albeit window-dressing.

  13. Unfortunately, bills in multiple states are attempting to remove philosophical and even religious exemptions. The statists and totalitarian-corporatists are on a rampage. Isn’t it funny that the same people who defend a woman’s right to “choose”, because it is her body, think that humans should be able to be forcibly vaccinated?
These people are bullies, and like all bullies, have a herd-mentality. They still might trample us, however. I mentioned above a friend who got the flu shot against her own judgment, and suffered dire consequences. Anyway, we need to organize on this front, as well as the GMO front.

    • We know better by now than to expect any principle or consistency from the kind of scum in US politics. They’re all a combination of crook, thug, and/or hysterical idiot. Of course the same goes for most people, it often seems. If it weren’t that I don’t wish added burdens on a dissident group, I’d say bring on such bills. Either it’ll be part of the criminals’ pushing too far, which in the end would be a good thing, or else everyone would just lie prone for the jackboot, in which case it wouldn’t make any difference anyway.
